The Board of Management of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has held its first meeting for the year 2024, where it reviewed the latest progress of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, FANR’s Financial Statement for 2023 as well as an update on its Research and Development Programme.

The Board of Management was briefed on the planned FANR’s regulatory oversight activities in 2024 that will be carried out at the Barakah based on FANR’s 2024 Annual Inspection Plan.

The planned activities include the quarterly inspections that will be carried out at units 1, 2 and 3 of the nuclear power plant, oversight of the qualification programme for reactor operators and senior reactors operators, which is managed by Nawah Energy Company PJSC, as well as the various tests at unit 4 of Barakah.

The Board of Management also received an update on FANR’s Research and Development Programme, highlighting projects related to reactor materials, waste management, and radiation safety infrastructure amongst others. The research projects are carried out in collaboration with various national and international counterparts.

FANR’s Research and Development Programme aims to support the regulatory framework and attract Emiratis by providing research opportunities in the nuclear field and fostering scientific activities such as publishing research papers and joining technical conferences.

Furthermore, members of the Board of Management discussed the preparations for the Professional Day of the Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers campaign, which was approved by the UAE Cabinet to be observed on 16th February on an annual basis, marking the day on which FANR issued the licence to operate the Unit 1 of the Barakah in February 2020.

The professional day aims to celebrate the efforts of the professionals who contributed to the success of the UAE nuclear and radiation sectors.
